Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that delivers acoustic shockwaves through the skin to the affected area, commonly used in the treatment of tendon pathologies.

Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, is an evidence based, cost effective treatment option for soft tissue disorders and an alternative to injection treatments such as steroids and ultimatly surgery.

The shockwaves stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms to facilitate the repair of the damaged tendon. A normal course of treatment will consist of three sessions with no more than a two week gap between sessions. More sessions could be considered for chronic conditions.

The technology can be used on painful tendons and major joints including, ankle, knee, hip, elbow and shoulder.

In Firefly Foot & Ankle Clinics, Shockwave therapy is commonly  used in the treatment of plantar fascia pain and tendinopathies including achilles, hamstring, patellar, gluteal and tennis elbow.

Shockwave treatment is delivered in multiple short sessions frequently resulting in patients experiencing a significant reduction in pain post treatment.
